Bennington Middle School 7th grade students recently took science beyond the classroom during a field experience at Flanagan Lake in partnership with Nebraska Game and Parks.
Students worked alongside Game and Parks staff to explore the wetland through hands-on activities focused on water quality, plants and mapping, macroinvertebrates, and conservation storytelling. Using field equipment such as water-quality testing kits, dip nets, maps, and identification tools, students collected evidence and learned more about the important role wetlands play in our environment.
The experience is designed to go beyond a traditional field trip. After their first day of exploring and observing, students developed their own questions about the wetland. During a second visit, they will return to the field to collect additional data and investigate those questions.
The goal is to give students an opportunity to experience what scientists do in the field: observe closely, ask questions, gather evidence, and use what they discover to better understand the world around them.

School districts across Nebraska have recently reported fraudulent phone calls targeting parents and guardians. In these calls, someone may pretend to be a school employee, often a counselor, and claim that a child is in trouble or involved in an emergency. The caller may then direct the parent to meet somewhere to pick up their child and pressure them to stay on the phone or not tell anyone.
These calls are fraudulent. If you receive a suspicious call regarding your child:
- Hang up and verify. Contact your child’s school directly using the school’s main phone number.
- Be cautious of unknown numbers. Pay particular attention to calls that create urgency or pressure you to act immediately.
- Do not meet at an undisclosed location. BPS staff will not ask you to meet at a secret or off-campus location to pick up your child.
- Do not keep the call a secret. BPS staff will not tell you that you cannot contact others or discuss the situation.
- Report suspicious calls. Notify your child’s school and consider reporting the call to local law enforcement.
If you are ever unsure whether a call or message regarding your child is legitimate, contact the school directly to verify the information before taking action.
